Introductory flying lessons

Unpowered flight

Flying lessons in a glider are an exciting and rewarding alternative to lessons in a powered aircraft, and also remain one of the most cost-effective ways of learning to fly.

Flying lesson

Gliding is arguably the most rewarding form of aviation

The same aeronautical principles and core flying skill lessons are taught, in this case by BGA-approved instructors, allowing you later to progress on to single engine aeroplanes simply and quickly, if so desired.

However, most glider pilots remain hooked by the thrill of soaring and travelling cross-country without an engine. Comparable to sailing in the air, the pilot learns to find and maintain height by using natural forces.

The flying lesson syllabus covers the initial requirements to make you into a safe and competent pilot, but it does not end there. Many glider pilots feel they are still learning with each flight, honing their soaring, navigating, and flying accuracy.

Flying courses

Your flying lessons begin with your first trial flight, allowing you to experience the unique thrill of gliding when your flight instructor hands you the controls at the top of your first launch.

Introductory course

This lesson package includes a thorough safety briefing, three aerotows to 2,000 feet and initial instruction. This forms the first part of the full BGA flying training syllabus. The instructor will also outline future lesson topics and course options available to the interested candidate.

Gliding is an easy sport to learn, but a hard one to master. This challenge, pitting you and your flying skills against the elements, ensures many rewarding years in gliding and also makes you a better and safer pilot.
