Gransden Lodge Airfield

At the Launch Point

Latitude: 52°11.154´ N; Longitude: 0°6.576´ W

This panoramic photo (by Andrew Watson) shows the 110 acre site looking north. In the background is the clubhouse, hangar and trailer park, all of which were constructed largely by club member effort.

The 1200m long main runway 04/22 has been widened to 140m to allow parallel winch and aerotow operation. The other 2 runs are 16/34, which is 840m long, and 09/27 which is 960m long. This ideal combination allows efficient operation in any wind direction.

HISTORY

Gransden Lodge was an operational bomber base during World War II and the details of this make fascinating reading.

The Cambridge Club moved to Gransden Lodge in October 1991, having previously shared Duxford Airfield.

A massive effort was required to turn this green field site (literally!) into a gliding airfield. Most of the old concrete runways had been dug up but our runways were laid out in the same pattern as the original and seeded with grass.

Visiting aircraft

Gliders are, of course, welcome! Self-launching sailplanes can take a glider launch and then start the engine when out of audible range..... ! Visitors in powered aircraft are strictly PPR and are restricted by the local planning authority. It is OK for tow planes from other clubs to land to retrieve their gliders but please aim to take off by 6pm local time and do get a good briefing about tow-out paths. If you are hoping to fly in please call the office for more details including the frequency to use.

If you are visiting the area by light aircraft, other than for gliding purposes there are two very friendly airfields close by, Bourn and Little Gransden, who are more geared up to receiving light aircraft.

Local Airfield map

In Longstowe turn west off the A1198 on to the B1046, signposted 'Longstowe' and 'Gransden Airfield'. (Do not take the turn signposted 'Gransden Airfield' in Caxton village.)

Drive through Longstowe village, then continue about 1.5 miles towards Little Gransden. The airfield entrance is on the B1046 between Longstowe and Little Gransden (Ordnance Survey map ref. TL289537) which is 0.4 mile after passing a water tower on your right.

There you turn right at the Gliding Club sign opposite Gransden Lodge Farm. Be sure to indicate early since we have had some incidents here. Proceed down the track at no more than 15mph. If a Clay Pigeon shoot is in progress, the main track will be blocked. Stop at the signs, wait for one of the shooters to signal that it is OK to proceed then be prepared to take a small detour around their site, following the signs.

When you reach the concrete track by the windsock, pause and read the safety signs there. Then turn right and drive all the way around the track to the clubhouse house, ignoring a turning on your left. Depending on the wind direction we may be operating from a position next to the track. Please drive on to the Clubhouse. Keep a good look out for landing aircraft be prepared to stop until they pass. Additional signs will be positioned where you need to take special care.
